The name Warwick derives from ye olde English for ‘Dwellings by the weir’.
It was founded when a little madam back in the 10th century got a strop on by the riverside (hence the name), stamped her feet about something (probably a pony) and refused to move. So they built a town off the back of it (in those days there was little provocation needed to prompt town planners, ah how times have changed).
Swan Street was originally called Swane Lane and the site of Merchants was the beer garden for a local ale house. During the time of this original ale house Warwick was a prominent town making it’s name as a trading post & the wealth of the merchants based here created much of the history, architecture & style of the town. & that, my friends, is the long answer to the bar’s name. The short answer is it was the first drawn out of the hat.
The 'Brothers' of Warwick
There are 2 brothers, Jason & Brandon, but the ‘Brothers’ alludes more to the family that runs the brasserie. We have a unique & talented bunch of characters all with abilities that make Merchants an exceptional place. At the moment we have a fully qualified psychologist, a beautician, a master mixologist, an innkeeper, a junior WWF wrestler, an IT consultant, a conservative, a financial adviser, a wine taster, a chemist, Evel Knievel, a Welsh Englishman, an English Welshman & at last count 3 ministers of the church. If we cannot solve a problem we call Ghostbusters, there’s no-one else left.
